Business and Breakfast

On Tuesday, July 12th, , the Town of North Hempstead Business & Tourism Development Corporation hosted a free two hour seminar on collaborative workspaces, seed funding and how to start a company at LaunchPad Long Island.Business incubators, such as LaunchPad Long Island and the Digital BallPark, are geared to young professionals and other entrepreneurs to assist them with their start-up and early stage companies. Many town representatives and local entrepreneurs came to give advice and share some experiences they’ve had with starting a business.


ESPOIR’ s First Community Outreach

On July 22 Councilwoman Russell attended ESPOIR’ s First Community Outreach at Martin Bunky Reed Park. Professionals such as Social Workers, Lawyers, Pharmacists, Teachers, Doctors, and Nurses and other professionals came out to support. This event was designed to connect to the community, and at the same time talk to the people and get to know the community a little bit better. ESPOIR wants  Westbury residents to learn and talk with friends and families, they see this event as a very positive way to celebrate the community spirit of Westbury and our appreciation for the residents, staff and volunteers of our organization who given so much to our town.

 


New Cassel's 32nd National Night Out

On Tuesday August 2nd, more than 100 residents came together to celebrate the communities annual National Night Out celebration. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. Dozens of community businesses and organizations came out to show support and get acquainted with members in the community. Council members from all districts, Supervisor Judy Bosowrth, Legislator Bynoe and our very own Council woman Viviana Russell came out to the joyous occasion.

On Saturday August 27th Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead in partnership with Nassau County Police Unions, hosted its 3rd annual backpack give away at Martin "Bunky" Reid Park. The event included refreshments, a session from Skills for Safe Bicycling, and a special guest from TT Torrez and the Hot 97 street team. About 1,000 kids and their families turned out to partake in this joyous occasion, the town in conjoined with the county and the police department wants to make sure that the children in the community have what they need to start school. The event was created to inspire children to get excited about education and simultaneously an opportunity for the community to come together and have a good time before the school year starts.

Councilwoman Viviana Russell and Supervisor Judi Bosworth extended a warm welcome as they addressed the attendees at the 2016 Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony held on December 6, 2016 at the Yes We Can Community.

Bishop Lionel Harvey, Pastor at First Baptist Cathedral of Westbury, gave the blessing for the event. Standing with Bishop Harvey are: Nassau County Legislator Seila Bynoe, North Hempstead Park Commissioner Jill Weber, North Hempstead Councilwoman Anna M. 2017 Black History Month Program & Art Exhibits

On February 10, 2017 the Town of North Hempstead held its Black History Month Celebration at the Yes We Can Community Center. The theme for this year's event was "African American Achievers in Art, Science and Education". On display were exhibits from the African American Museum featuring the Women of NASA and "African Genius". Also on display were exhibits from the first African American syndicated cartoonist Brumsic Brandon, Jr., and his daughter Barbara Brandon-Croft.

School for Language & Communication Development opens on Prospect Avenue

On March 9, 2017 town officials Councilwoman Viviana Russell and Supervisor Judi Bosworth, along with other elected officials, attended Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the School for Language & Communication Development. SLCD is an adult program which focuses on vocational training, job placement and life skills development for young adults.

On March 23, 2017 Councilwoman Viviana Russell presented a Proclamation on behalf of the Town of North Hempstead to Nassau County's retiring PBA President Mr. James Carver. Mr. Carver was appointed to the Nassau County Police Department on July 18, 1986, and retired on January 19, 2017. Mr. Carver served for 30 years as a Nassau County Po, with 4 years of prior service with the NYPD. Officer Carver performed over 20 years of Nassau County PBA service.

On March 24, 2017 Councilwoman Viviana Russell participated in Career Day at Drexel Avenue School. Ms. Russell's topic was how government works, and the process for becoming an elected official. Ms. Russell addressed Ms. Carol David's 2nd grade class, Mrs. Cireseanu's & Mrs. Gonzalez's 3rd grade class, and Ms. Marciano's & Mrs. Rice's 4th grade class.

Fresh From The Garden comes to New Cassel

The Fresh From The Garden Program sponsored by the EAC Network is welcomed to New Cassel by Councilwoman Viviana Russell & Supervisor Judi Bosworth. The Fresh From The Garden program provide income eligible residents of New Cassel, who are 60 years of age or older, with monthly nutritional chats wit a registered dietitian, healthy cooking demonstrations, screening for high nutritional risk, screening for eligibility for SNAP, meals on wheels, and monthly distribution of fresh produce.

The program activities will take place at Magnolia Gardens, 899 Broadway, New Cassel. Monthly Nutritional Chats with a registered dietitian will take place on Wednesday from 10:30am-11:30am, Cooking Demonstrations will take place on Thursdays. Just one community beautification project can make the world seem a little brighter.  Councilwoman Russell, Nassau county Legislator Seila Byno , and community members volunteered their time to help clean up the Westbruy Hills neighborhood . Earth Day is a great way for members of the community to show commitment to their community’s environment. Helping to clean up litter and debris, and providing community education about the importance of protecting local water resources!

All year around the community picks locations in the area to clean up and beautify, but earth day is just as special day where we can join other communities all across the world to help improve the overall condition of the world that we all love.

 


EOC of Nassau County Women's History Month Program

On  March 29 , 2017 over  100 woman all dressed in purple gathered at this year’s  Woman’s History “Storm Riders”  Program hosted by The EOC of Nassau County Inc.,  The event held to honor some woman who have survived and/or are the storm in their lives. The program honored 8 woman including Teri Washington editor in chief of Harvest Magazine. The event was filled with love am woman empowerment.

Town of North Hempstead Honors its Champions

The Westbury High School basketball team started off the season with the difficult loss of their assistant coach Edwin Redd. The team dedicated their season to their late coach and made a promise to succeed. The team made history by winning the school’s first AA County and Long Island Championship. The Nassau AA-ll conference, with an 11-1 mark up and a jet through the playoffs. The dragons beat Farmingdale in the first round, then battling the Long Island Champions, the Baldwin Bruins.  Winning their first AA Championship by beating the #1 seed the Uniondale Knights. With a heart pounding game against Half Hollow Hills East the dragons defeated the team and went to play Mount Vernon High school in the state tournament in Binghamton NY, where they played with pride but in the end were defeated.

In honor of their many accomplishments as a team Councilwoman Viviana Russell and The Town of North Hempstead has presented the Westbury Basketball Team with signs that will be around the community that will celebrate their accomplishments as the AA Long Island Champions.


Past and Future Presidents of Delta Sigma Theta

On April 22, 2017 Councilwoman Viviana Russell joined sorors of Delta Sigma Theta at Nassau Community College to recognizing and celebrating past and current  presidents of the organization. Councilwoman Russell, in her address to the audience, congratulated the organization and it's presidents for their community service, leadership and empowering other young women to become future leaders.
